Azeri Horse of the Year Shoe

Azeri Horse of the Year Shoe

These aluminum horseshoes were worn by the great racemare Azeri, one of the sport's most accomplished female turf titans. In 2002, Azeri initiated an amazing winning streak for owner Allan Paulson and trainer Laura de Seroux with victories in the Apple Blossom Stakes, Milady, Vanity, Clement Hirsch and culminating with the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Her victory earned her the honor of 2002 Horse of the Year in a landslide, becoming the first mare to win racing’s highest award since Lady’s Secret in 1986. Azeri's win streak would eventually grow to 11 consecutive races before suffering an injury, ironically, in the 2003 Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup Handicap. However, her competitive fires did not diminish and she returned to racing in 2004 under the care of Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, winning the prestigious Go for Wand and Spinster Stakes. In total, her accomplished racing career crossed four seasons with impressive results: 17 wins in 24 starts with four second-place finishes and $4 million in earnings. Azeri's legacy continues on as all eight of the foals that she produced as a broodmare started and won.The shoes are mounted on a 9x11" cherry wood plaque with brass halter tag nameplate and emanates from the Julie Albright collection of horse racing memorabilia. A rare opportunity to own an actual racing plate worn by a Horse of the Year. What a lady, what a champion!
