Babe Ruth & Bobby Jones Signed 1928 World Champions Dinner Program

Babe Ruth & Bobby Jones Signed 1928 World Champions Dinner Program

The January 4, 1928 World Champions Dinner sponsored by the Madison Square Garden Club drew everybody who was anybody in sports. This stately and monumentally rare program from the banquet and dinner at the Hotel Commodore is signed by many of those jock set A-Listers - including Babe Ruth, Bobby Jones and Gene Tunney! These illustrious legends are among a group of 9 signatures saturating the back cover of the 12-page program printed on heavy stock, some others being the Garden’s boxing promoter Tex Rickard, champion swimmer (and future “Tarzan”) Johnny Weissmuller, and famed sportswriter (and future author of “Guys and Dolls”) Damon Runyon. The signatures are in pencil under “To Miss Ford”, with Tunney, Ruth, Rickard and Jones the 1st four to sign. The program is a confection in particular for boxing and Tunney buffs since the heavyweight champ, fresh off his 1927 victory over Jack Dempsey in the infamous “Long Count” fight, also signed an inside autograph page above a photo of himself shaking hands with a rather rotund gentleman in a straw hat. The latter Tunney marker is a real beaut, large, wide and strong, grading 9/10. All autographs on the back cover are also quite nice, with the pencil strokes not having degraded much through the years and grading 8/10 at the least. Program itself has held up fairly nicely as well, though the inside pages have separated from the spine. Front and back cover are still firmly connected, and attached to the spine is a red, white and blue lanyard-style braid with 2 tassels at the top. Cover features a raised-image American flag in the top center above a regally printed “A Dinner to the Champions, Madison Square Garden Club, Hotel Commodore, January 4th 1928” in 3 different printing styles. Program measures 6 x 9” - and is immeasurable in historical and collectible terms. Sigs are beautiful, overall EX.
