Babe Ruth Last At-Bat Wearing #3 at Yankee Stadium Ticket Stub BGS NM-MT 8
Offered is a ticket stub from the last time that Babe Ruth played in an organized baseball game at a Major League stadium, a game in which he wore his iconic #3 uniform for the last time. Displayed is a ticket stub for the July 28, 1943, War Relief Benefit games at Yankee Stadium in New York City, an event that included two games: A regular season contest between the visiting Cleveland Indians and the home New York Yankees that the Indians won 6-2 and a special game that pitted a team of the U.S. Navy North Carolina Pre-Flight School, who were Major League ball players (called the "Cloudbusters") who were undergoing pilot training, versus a combined team of former New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians players that was designated as the "Yanklands." The Cloudbusters team featured a future Hall of Famer in Ted Williams, and also had Johnny Pesky and Johnny Sain. The Babe managed the Yanklands, and he took the assignment seriously, attempting to assert his managerial potential. In the sixth inning, Ruth put himself in as a pinch hitter. He wore the pinstriped Yankees uniform, with the number "3" jersey he wore in the 1942 film The Pride of the Yankees. He faced right-hander Johnny Sain. The Bambino managed a long, foul fly ball and then walked. After he reached second base, the Babe removed himself for a pinch runner. Sain thus became the last player to pitch to Ruth in an organized game at a Major League Stadium. On April 15, 1947, Sain would be the first pitcher to face Jackie Robinson as he pitched in Robinson's Major League debut game at Ebbets Field. The ticket stub has been encapsulated and BGS graded as 8 NM-MT Stub. The stub, measuring approx. 2.5x3.6", shows some toning, but is in otherwise excellent condition.
