Barry Bonds Arizona State Game Used Glove and Equipment Collection
Collection includes the earliest known Bonds game-used items we've seen from his three-year All-America run at Arizona State. Includes a glove and pair of spikes as well as a black leather equipment bag and 1984 baseball yearbook signed by a youthful Bonds. ASU of course was the launching pad for Bonds' spectacular rise as baseball's future (and controversial) home run king. Drafted in the 2nd round by the Giants in '82, Bonds decided instead to enroll at the same school that his distant cousin Reggie Jackson had, and immediately began a three-year run as the Pac-10's best player, during which he made extensive use of the well-worn Wilson A2002-XLO glove bearing a "Bonds 24" in hand-written in black marker on the wrist strap and a somewhat now-faded "Bonds" on the pinkie. The black and white Ringor spikes are identical, with the right shoe bearing a "24" in blue marker on a white slash and dirt caked on the spikes and sole; left shoe is unmarked and clean. In a picture in the yearbook -- signed by Bonds and other Devil players -- the young Bonds was literally still in knee pants (not to mention stirrup socks), yet his bat was scarily mature, racking up a .347 average from '83 to '85 and tying an NCAA record with 7 straight hits in the '84 College WS. Signature is over the picture on a full-page profile on page 12 of the "Arizona State Baseball '84" yearbook, and reads "Best wishes, Barry Bonds" in black marker, a prime early Bonds that grades a 9/10. Also signing were future big leaguers Mike Devereaux & Oddibe McDowell. Yearbook itself is NRMT with some mild and unobtrusive staining on the cover, which shows Bonds being high-fived by McDowell after a homer -- a very common Bonds theme in the years since. The sturdy 12 x 17" bag with silver zipper and bucklings has his number "24" (worn in tribute to Willie Mays) in gold on the front beside the Sun Devil logo & "Devils Baseball ASU". Bag is well used but the supple, quality leather looks and feels buttery soft and is in EX condition. Tremendous esoterica that will impressivley fill out any top-shelf Bonds display. All came directly from ASU.
