Bobby Hull & Gordie Howe WHA Original Painting
Displayed is a circa 1974 colorful painting of the World Hockey Association's first two superstars, Hall of Famers Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe - players who are among the best players to ever play hockey. In 1972, the World Hockey Association began play as a rival to the established National Hockey League. Bobby Hull, the NHL superstar left wing of the Chicago Blackhawks', jumped to the new WHA with the Winnipeg Jets and provided instant credibility for the new circuit. Hull scored 51 goals and added 52 assists for Winnipeg in that 1972-73 season, and Hull was awarded the Gary L. Davidson as the WHA's Most Valuable Player. The next season, Gordie Howe ended his retirement and joined the WHA as a member of the Houston Aeros as a 45-year-old. The right-wing scored 31 goals and added 69 assists for 100 points, and then Gordie was given the Gary L. Danielson Award. Howe's first WHA season was spectacular enough for the WHA's MVP Award to be renamed the Gordie Howe Trophy, beginning in the next season. In that season, Hull won the newly named Gordie Howe Award (MVP) a second time. Hull scored 303 goals and had 335 assists for 638 points in his seven seasons in the WHA. In his 15-year NHL career, mostly with the Chicago Blackhawks, Bobby scored 610 goals and added 560 assists for 1,780 points overall. Hull was a 2-time Hart Trophy winner, a 3-time Ross Trophy winner and a Stanley Cup winner with the NHL Blackhawks. Hull led the Winnipeg Jets to two WHA Championships. Howe played six years in the WHA: Four with Houston and two with the New England Whalers, and he had 174 goals and 334 assists for 508 WHA points. In his NHL career, he played 25 years with the Detroit Red Wings and a season with the Hartford Whalers and scored 801 goals, 1,044 assists and 1,850 NHL points. Copies of the painting were used as advertising displays to publicize the WHA. The painting also features vivid logos of the Winnipeg Jets and the Houston Aeros. The painting is signed by noted artist Tom Hughes, and it measures 24.5x36.5". The painting comes directly from the collection of the President of the New England Whalers.
