C55 Imperial Tobacco Hockey Complete Set (45)
Complete set of 45 cards. After the success American tobacco companies had with promoting their products with baseball cards, Canadian companies decided to use this marketing strategy with their National sport. The result was three similar size card sets featuring the biggest hockey stars of the day, catalogued as C55, C56 and C57. The following two lots feature two of the most popular hockey sets of this era, the C55 and C56. Initially catalogued first, the C55 set was actually issued during 1911-1912, a year after the C56 set, and contains perhaps the most important hockey card in the hobby - the Georges Vezina Rookie card. Half-pose portraits of the subjects are surrounded by beautiful pastel backgrounds, bordered on each side by vintage hockey sticks of the era. A true hockey card masterpiece! The Vezina example within this set contains rounded corners with several creases, and was sent to PSA for authentication. Includes: #1 Moran (EX, slightly short s/s), 4 Malone (VG-EX), 20 Taylor (EX), 24 Cleghorn (EX), 31 Ross (GD-VG), 38 Vezina (PSA 1), 42 Lalonde (VG-EX), 45 Laviolette (EX, slightly short s/s). Grades a sparkling 35% EX-MT or better, 25% EX, 25% VG to VG-EX, 15% lesser. Tremendous offering of this difficult to find issue.
