C56 Imperial Tobacco Hockey Complete Set (36) plus a near set of Lacrosse cards
Complete set of 36 cards. As the first major hockey production featuring actual players, the C56’s 36 subjects are all perceived as “Rookie cards”, although the term “Rookie card” usually does not apply to issues of this era. Nevertheless, the Rookie cards of all the major stars of the day are included, with the exception of Georges Vezina, who would make his first appearance a year later. Includes: HOCKEY - #1 Patrick (FR-GD, name on front has been removed), 2 Lesueur (VG), 8 Ross (VG), 12 Ross (FR), 14 Dunderdale (GD), 15 Taylor (GD), 20 Russell (VG-EX), 26 Patrick (FR), 28 Moran (EX), 30 Johnson (VG-EX), 36 Lalonde (FR-GD). Grades 20% EX to EX-MT, 40% VG to VG-EX, 40% FR to GD. LACROSSE - near set of 90/100 cards (missing #’s 5, 8, 20, 23, 28, 58, 82, 85, 92 and 98). This set is basically nondescript but does include some interesting facts. The reverse contains two different types, with the scarcer version (according to our set’s example) more elaborate in design. There is also a card of “P. Moran” which bears a striking resemblance to Paddy Moran, hockey HOFer, and a member of the C56 set. The lacrosse cards are nicer in overall appearance, with a handful of Near Mint specimens, including the “P. Moran” which grades a resounding NM-MT. Grades 10% NRMT, 45% EX to EX-MT, 25% VG to VG-EX, 20% PR to GD.
