Carl Mays Player Assignment & Signed Check
On August 16, 1920, one of Yankee submarine pitcher Carl Mays' rising fastballs cracked the Indians' Ray Chapman's skull. Chapman died the next day, the only man to ever die from a beaning. Though ostracized by some as a "killer", and likely kept from the HOF for it, Mays carried on admirably, going 22-11 that season and 207-126 in a 15-year career. This very rare, MT conditon assignment-of-player contract documents Mays's sale to the Reds for $20,000. Dated December 15, 1923, it bears a perfect signature by Yankee owner Jacob Ruppert. Mays and Ruppert signed the accompanying 1922 Yankee paycheck for $539.99, Mays in pencil, rating a 9/10. Both of Ruppert's signatures in black fountain pen are 10/10.
