Christopher Mathewson Endorsed Royalty Check for the Book Pitching In A Pinch
An inaugural member of the Hall of Fame, pitcher Christopher “Christy” Mathewson was one of the great players of the infamous dead ball era. Offered is a one-of-a-kind cancelled royalty check signed by the legend and folded inside a rare copy of Mathewson’s noted instructional book “Pitching in a Pinch” which was published by G.P. Putnam’s Sons in 1912. The earliest known check signed by the player during his sixteen-year career and one of a few documents where he signed his full name, the priceless item is taped upside-down on the book’s title page. Under a protective plastic sleeve, the book’s cover is made of maroon cloth with gilt author’s name and book title on the front. Worn and serrated in several places including the cover of the backstrip and top, the inside hinges of the front and rear have been repaired with clear tape. Both an advertisement and a picture of John McGraw have been slightly repaired with clear tape and placed into the front of the book, though are not affected besides a slight chip on the lower edge of the photo. Only four days prior to his 33rd birthday, the check is dated August 8th, 1913, to the mythical New York Giant. The book itself is in fair-to-good condition. An unbelievable find and crucial piece of baseball history.
