Cigar Runner-Up Jockey Club Gold Cup Saddle Cloth

Cigar Runner-Up Jockey Club Gold Cup Saddle Cloth

Arguably the greatest race horse in recent memory, Cigar is best remembered for winning 16 straight races during an amazing stretch in 1995-1996, matching the mark of the immortal Citation. Along the way, Cigar set the record for North American earnings (later passed by Curlin) and developing a legion of fans that would follow him up until his passing in 2014. This rare race-worn cloth of Cigar's is from his historic match-up against Skip Away in the 1996 Jockey Club Gold Cup. In one of the greatest fields ever assembled, the race came down to a stretch duel between Skippy and Cigar. Skip Away won the battle in what turned out to be a changing of the guard among the elite race horses in America, but this white saddle cloth, which features a red stitched #6 and black letters spelling out "THE JOCKEY CLUB GOLD CUP" and "CIGAR," survives as a testament to that amazing race and an amazing animal.
