Circa 1947 Jack R. Robinson 20th Century Award
Early standing trophy of a winged victory with eagles below. In brown bakelite, the plaque on the front is made out to "Jack R. Robinson….20th Century Award…For Distinguished And Faithful Services To God and Humanity…Special Voluntary Citizens Committee NYC…O.D. Dempsey Dir." Though no year on it, we believe it is around 1947 based on the use of his early name "Jack R. Robinson." Brooklyn manufacturer on the bottom. The First. And, without question, the most significant man to ever play the game of baseball. The man who broke baseball’s color line, Jackie Robinson was also the first African-American to win the Most Valuable Player Award and the first to be honored as Rookie of the Year (the award is now named for him). He is also the only baseball player, black or white, to be on a United States postage stamp and minted coin and the first African-American to be elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame (in 1962 he was elected in his first year of eligibility, the first since Lou Gehrig in 1939). While Babe Ruth changed the way in which we played the game, Jackie changed the way we think. We are proud to say that each of these select pieces are from the collection of Jackie’s wife, Rachel Robinson. Each will come with her signed letter of authenticity.
