Circa 1990 Pete Gray (One Armed Baseball Player) Signed Photograph

Circa 1990 Pete Gray (One Armed Baseball Player) Signed Photograph

Presented is a circa 1990 signed photograph of Pete Gray, a one-armed baseball player who played in the Major Leagues for the St. Louis Browns in 1945. As a boy, Pete was right-handed, and at about age seven or eight he lost his right arm in a wagon accident. He learned to throw left-handed, and he discovered how to hit one-handed. He also learned how to catch a ball in his gloved left hand and yet quickly remove the glove to transfer the ball to his bare left hand for a throw. He played three seasons in the minor leagues from 1941-43, and then he played the '44 season with the St. Louis Browns of the American League. He is the first of three one-armed players to play in the Major Leagues. In 1945, he played in 77 games, hit .218 and played the outfield, and his speed was impressive. Sometimes Gray was resented by teammates who felt he was only in the Majors as a publicity stunt to increase attendance. In public appearances, he was commended as an inspiration to wounded returning serviceman from World War II who would be encouraged to overcome their wounds as they returned to civilian life. After his one Major League season, Gray played three more seasons in the minors. The photo measures approx. 8x9.75". Gray has signed the photo in large, bold script with a black marker. The signed photo represents a man who overcame a tremendous obstacle to play in the Major Leagues.
