This classic 6x9" photo shows 3'7" dwarf Eddie Gaedel stepping into the batter's box against the Detroit Tigers pitcher Bobby Cain in a promotional stunt designed by St. Louis Brown's owner Bill Veeck. With the Browns suffering significantly in the standings during the 1951 season, Veeck trotted out Gaedel (wearing jersey number "1/8") as an act of ridiculous showmanship. Gaedel drew a walk and was quickly replaced by a pinch runner. Gaedel never played in another game as AL President Will Harridge immediately put a stop to such mischief. The photo includes newspaper clippings regarding the story.
