Collection of Race Trophies from 1986 Horse of the Year, Lady's Secret, awarded to her Owner, Eugene Klein (7)
Lady's Secret was an Eclipse Award-winning race horse, who was listed in the "Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century," purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Klein for $200,000 and trained throughout her racing career by U.S. Racing Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas. She was diminutive in size, weighing in at slightly over 900 pounds, but big in heart. Always a frontrunner, she won 25 of her 45 races and garnered nine second-place finishes. As the greatest daughter of Triple Crown winner Secretariat, she dominated the fillies she raced against and challenged and defeated the males on several occasions. In her historic 1986 season, Lady's Secret claimed Horse of the Year honors by compiling 10 graded stakes wins, including eight Grade I's - and beat her male competitors four different times during the year. This lot features seven different race trophies/awards Lady's Secret took home during the 1985 and 1986 seasons. These trophies were in the possession of Lady's Secret's owner, Eugene Klein, and had been displayed for the past few decades at the San Diego Sports Hall of Fame. Owner trophies from superstar racehorses are one of the rarest finds in horse racing memorabilia. 1) A weighty, 6" tall gold-colored (probably brass) clock that was awarded to Lady's Secret by the NYRA following her victory at the 1986 Maskette Stakes (now called the Go For Wand Handicap) with a time of 1:33.60 - which still remains a stakes record. The Swiss-made clock, which measures five inches wide and works fine, is specially engraved on its base with the following text: "THE MASKETTE, BELMONT 1986, Won by Eugene V. Klein's Lady's Secret." 2) Sterling silver hallmarked tea pot that was awarded to Klein's racing team following Lady Secret's victory at the 1985 Beldame Stakes. Somewhat tarnished, the bulky tea pot weighs over five pounds (2,400g) measures 12" high by 8" wide and includes the following engraving in its front: "New York Racing Association, The Beldame, Belmont 1985 Won by Eugene V. Klein's Lady's Secret." 3) Single-handled, sterling silver hallmarked coffee pot that Lady's Secret won at the 1986 Shuvee handicap at Belmont with a time of 1:41.80. It stands 9" tall and weighs over two pounds (938g). Ridden to victory by jockey Pat Day, Lady's Secret's prize, which was produced by F. Gorevic & Son, Inc., is engraved across the front with the following text: "New York racing Association, The Shuvee, BELMONT 1986, Won by Eugene V. Klein's Lady's Secret." 4) From a win in the 1986 El Eincino Stakes. This trophy measures 9" tall and features a two-handled, gold-washed sterling silver cup made by Tiffany & Co. that rests atop a green marble base with an engraved gold plaque reading: "January 18, 1986, One & One-Sixteenth Miles, Won By LADY'S SECRET, Mr. & Mrs. Eugene V. Klein, Owner, D. Wayne Lukas, Trainer, Chris McCarron, Jockey, Time: 1:14:1." The front of the two-handled trophy is engraved "EL ENCINO STAKES" and those words are centered above the engraved logo of Santa Anita Park. The entire trophy including the base weighs eight pounds; the sterling silver cup alone weighs 506 grams. 5) From the 1985 Ruffian Stakes. Ridden by jockey Jorge Velasquez, she won the race with a time of 1:47.40. The impressive, two-handled sterling silver hallmarked trophy stands 15" tall and weighs almost five pounds (an astounding 2,218 grams of sterling silver to be exact), with decorative berries and leaves throughout its raised design on the cup as well as the base. The front and back of the hefty trophy cup is not inscribed with anything specific about the race, but you can clearly see in the winner's circle photo with the winning team. 6) Serving tray (786g), with the sterling silver lion's symbol on the bottom, which was also awarded to Lady’s Secret following her victory at the 1985 Ruffian Stakes. It measures 14" wide by 9.5" deep and 3" tall. The inscription on the side has worn off, and its lone handle is broken on one side but can be repaired. 7) From the Iron Lady's victory in the 1985 Prima Donna Stakes (Oaklawn Park) and is engraved: "6 Furlongs Champion Trophy Won by Lady's Secret: Jockey Jorge Velasquez; Trainer D. Wayne Lukas; Owner Eugene Klein." Lightweight (hollow) silver plated trophy that stands 11" tall and weighs slightly less than a pound. Accompanied by a large matted photo of Lady's Secret and her owners in the winner's circle after being awarded the trophy. Lot includes Letter of Provenances from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
