After playing in just one game in the minor leagues, Howell joined the New York Rangers in 1952 and spent the next twenty-one seasons in the NHL. After he won his only Norris Trophy in 1967, Bobby Orr's rookie year, Howell said, "I'm glad I won this award now because I expect it's going to belong to Bobby Orr from now on."
