Coney Island Jockey Club Program, September 14, 1886, Featuring Montrose, Winner of Next Year’s Kentucky Derby

The fourth race was the feature, The Great Eastern Handicap, won by King Fox, with jockey Spellman up, otherwise known as the “dude of the turf.” The jockey was soon murdered on the streets of New York with the killer(s) never found. In the race was number 8, Montrose, winner of the 1887 Kentucky Derby under jockey I. Lewis. Isaac Murphy finished last. The program is in excellent condition with no rips or tears. The first two or three finishers are numbered in pencil.
