Count Fleet Horseshoe in Sterling Silver Mount Presented by the Hertz Family to Famed Aviatrix

Count Fleet Horseshoe in Sterling Silver Mount Presented by the Hertz Family to Famed Aviatrix

This horseshoe of the great Count Fleet was encased in sterling and made into an ashtray (as Seabiscuit owner Charles Howard famously did as well for 'Biscuit). This is the first Count Fleet we have seen, and this one is extra special as it was not only presented by "John and Fannie" Hertz, of the Hertz Rental Car fortune, but the engraved presentees are "Jackie and Floyd." They are none other than Jacqueline Cochran and Floyd Bostwick Odlum. "Jackie" was one of the most gifted racing pilots of her generation and a pioneer as a woman and in the field of aeronautics. A contemporary and working partner with Amelia Earnhart, she is one of the most gifted racing pilots of her generation. She was an important contributor to the formation of the wartime Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) and Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP). Her husband, Floyd Bostwick Odlum, was a breeder and founder of Atlas Corp. and CEO of RKO Pictures in Hollywood. Fourteen years her senior, he was reputed to be one of the 10 richest men in the world. Engraving reads, "To Jackie and Floyd... COUNT FLEET... Winner of the Triple Crown 1943... Champion Breeding Stallion 1951... From Fannie and John Hertz." Circa 1951, in NRMT condition.
