Day Star 1878 Kentucky Derby Mounted Photograph - Earliest We Have Seen

Day Star 1878 Kentucky Derby Mounted Photograph - Earliest We Have Seen

This is the earliest Kentucky Derby photo we have ever seen, as what became the premiere American thoroughbred horse race was still in it's infancy. Mounted on board, this expansive albumen print measures 13.25x14.75" and reads "Day Star Winner Dominion Day Handicap World's Record 1/2 mi.tr. - 1 1/4 mi. 209 1/5 Jockey Archibald." Day Star was the winner of the 4th annual Kentucky Derby held at Churchill Downs on May 21, 1878, and not surprisingly Day Star set a new Kentucky Derby record. Of an exceptional lineage, this chestnut colt came from a foundation sire of many modern thoroughbred winners. Magnificent image of Day Star with his prosperous and beaming owner, and jockey Archibald with a broad smile, with onlookers in the background. There's significant creasing in the upper right corner, but overall clarity is excellent, and chances of finding another specimen are doubtful.
