Early Ty Cobb Handwritten Letters (2)

Early Ty Cobb Handwritten Letters (2)

You'd never know how ornery Ty Cobb was by these two incredibly rare letters written to a Detroit friend named Fred Hall showing the warm and fuzzy side of the prickly Peach -- a distinction Hall earned by gifting Cobb a pet puppy. One letter, measuring 8 1/2 x 11", is dated January 3, 1915, the year Cobb won his fifth straight batting crown. Addressing the letter with a rather stiff "Dear Hall," Cobb invites him to Augusta for a hunting date. "We have had great rains," he writes, "and birds should be plentiful," adding with pride that the pooch is "growing fast and certainly looks good." Signed, "Very sincerely, Ty Cobb" in pen with a flourish and underlining of the name. Though faded some, this is a particuarly clear and vivid Cobb marker grading 7/10. There's also an extradorindary embellishment for a Cobb piece -- an added "T.R.C." hand-written in the upper left hand corner! Obvious foxing, paper loss around the edges and mild discoloration of the paper, and the back has staining from glue as apparently the letter was mounted in an album - but the text is unaffected and o/a it merits VG status. The other letter, though undated, was sent first, as Cobb begins, "Well, I have just returned Saturday from a trip hunting and while I was away the pup came and I want to tell you he is the handsomest thing I ever saw...I hope to make a fine dog of him." He writes later, "Bring Mrs. Hall and the baby for we have some here to keep company," and ends, "With kindest regards to Mrs. Hall and yourself I remain, Sincerely, Ty Cobb," the signature a notch above the first with no fading and a stronger ink flow. On two 5 x 6" sheets with the same glue swatches on the back but less damage to the front, which has sharp corners and exceptionally smooth edges, VG-EX.
