Ernie Davis 1961 Liberty Bowl Outstanding Running Back Trophy

Ernie Davis 1961 Liberty Bowl Outstanding Running Back Trophy

The "Elmira Express" was this outstanding athlete's nickname. Recipient of the Heisman Trophy, commended by JFK, and the first African-American to become a member of a Jewish fraternity - Ernie Davis was one-of-a-kind. Davis was voted MVP of the Cotton Bowl Classic and the 1961 Liberty Bowl, where he received this trophy during his senior year with the Syracuse Orangemen. The trophy rests on a 6 1/2 x 6 1/2" wooden base, and measures 22" tall. The plaque on the bottom reads, "Strawbridge & Clothier Award, Outstanding Back, 1961, Liberty Bowl Game, Syracuse vs Miami". Wings (slightly loose) adorn each side of the base. A player stands on top of the trophy, about to throw the football. A black and yellow sticker under the trophy says it was purchased from Spike's Plaques, Trophies. The trophy itself is a bit loose from the base, but can be easily fixed. Davis was the top pick in the 1962 NFL Draft, but his short life has us wonder what more great things he may have accomplished, on the field and off.
