Ernie Davis 1961 Syracuse University Varsity Club Most Valuable Player Award
The poignant story of Syracuse University football running back Ernie Davis, the "Elmira Express," has been often told, and Davis' short life has even been the subject of a 2008 movie biography entitled The Express. Davis was the first African-American athlete to win the Heisman Trophy. Drafted by the Washington Redskins, then almost immediately traded to the Cleveland Browns in December of 1961, Davis would never play a professional football game. He was diagnosed with leukemia in 1962 and died in 1963. At auction here is Ernie Davis' 1961 Syracuse University MVP trophy. Measuring 16" high and 12" wide, the wooden trophy is topped by a metal football player and features a plaque on the front engraved as follows: "Syracuse University Varsity Club Most Valuable Player Award - 1961 Ernie Davis." The trophy is all original and was obtained from a member of Davis' family. LOA.
