First Running of Jerome Stakes Program (1866)

First Running of Jerome Stakes Program (1866)

Here's a first ever program for the Jerome Stakes for Tuesday, October 2, 1866. The Jerome Stakes is the second oldest horse race and preceded the Kentucky Derby by almost 10 years. It was first run at Jerome Park in the Bronx and then moved, but always keeping its original name, and is now run at Aqueduct Racetrack. This historic program is a one-page card on heavy stock. The second of three races was entitled "The Jerome Race." It has a list of all the horses and who entered them, each a separate sentence. Measures 5x8" and is in EX-MT condition with a neat fold down the center as its only flaw.
