First U.S. Open Polo Championship Sterling Trophy (1904)

Notes: Simply amazing museum quality and historically significant trophy won by the “Wanderers” in the 1904 US Open Polo Championship. The US Open is one of the three major polo tournaments, along with the British and Argentine championships. It attracts the finest polo players in the world for a month long competition. Raised letters on the front read “First Open Polo Championship / Van Cortlandt Park NY / Sept 20th 1904, won by the “Wanderers.” Mr. C. Randolph Snowden, Mr. J.E Cowdin, Mr. J.M Waterbury, Jr, Mr. Lawrence Waterbury / Score 4 1/2 Goals / Versus “Freebooters.” Mr. Devereux Milburn, Mr. R L Agassiz, Mr. Foxhall Keene, Mr. Joshua Crane Jr. / Score 3 Goals.” Figural polo mallet’s on both sides with floral decoration around the base of the cup and on the stem. Stamped on the base “Whiting Mfg Co / New York / Sterling / 7214.” This is certainly one of the most historic trophies in the world of Polo and possibly one of a kind. The trophy measures 15 1/8" high, 5 1/8" across the top and 5 1/4" across the base.

Condition: Amazing condition, the only flaw is a small “ding” near the base and a slight bend in one of the figural mallets. Near Mint.
