Gene Wilder Willy Wonka Costume
One of the true Hollywood "cult" films of modern times. This 1971 musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic children's book, Charlie And the Chocolate Factory warmed the hearts of children of all ages. Featuring Gene Wilder as the irrepressible Candy Man, who could make a sunrise and sprinkle it with dew. This elaborate garment is as signature a costume as John Travolta's white Saturday Night Fever suit or Judy Garland's Wizard of Oz dress. It is complete with Wilder's rumpled felt top hat, white collared shirt, elaborate brocade vest, original leather belt, and his signature purple velvet frock topcoat. This film has influenced generations through its delectable fantasy and spirited songs by inspired songwriting team Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. It of course spawned the #1 hit song Candy Man by Sammy Davis Jr.After its use in the film, the costume was used to promote the film on tour around the United States. Because of the film's lack of commercial success and "not having any further use" for it, the producer let the publicity director keep it (his letter of authenticity is included). Only in later years would the film's true importance be realized, and hence, the costume itself.
