George Sisler Game Used Bat (35")
Goerge Sisler came to the big leagues as a lefthanded pitcher, but just like another famous southpaw of the 1910s who could pitch and hit, the feel of one of these massive cudgels in his hands was just too strong a lure to give up on an everyday basis. And so George Sisler, like a guy named Ruth, became a full-time hitter, and what a hitter. Such a hitter that it took 84 years for someone to come along and better the 257 hits he racked in 1920 for the St. Louis Browns (and it took Ichiro over 100 more at-bats to do it). Sisler, who hit .340 for his career, cleared .400 twice. Not bad for a guy who sometimes saw double because of sinusitis. You get the idea by now that this is one very special bat here, one that would probably hit back if a woodpecker had at it. The 35" stick, which has been identified as being used by Sisler in 1923-25 (after hitting .420 in '22, he missed the '23 season because of the sinusitis), has a gorgeous dark brown finish from thick handle to long barrel, and to pick it up is like trying to lift a steel ingot. Sisler may have been a mere 170 pounds but the man was STRONG to be able to wield this 42-ounce club, which he did by choking up on it -- on an area that now is lighter having had tape wrapped around it in his day. If you look closely, you'll see two tiny nails hammered into the sweet spot to the left of Sisler's engraved name, a great (if not exactly legal) embellishment to this legendary bat. Easier to see are the multitide of ball marks and a long crack on the handle that led to its retirement. Knob has a carved out hole in it, possibly another little part of the Sisler hitting formula. The display appeal of this bat is off the charts.
