Gordon Smiley Racing Memorabilia Including Helmet and Indy 500 Jacket

Gordon Smiley Racing Memorabilia Including Helmet and Indy 500 Jacket

Gordon Smiley was an American race car driver who raced in the Indianapolis 500 twice, in 1980 and 1981. Smiley was killed while trying to qualify for a third Indianapolis 500 in 1982 when his car hit the wall nose first at nearly 200 mph. This collection includes Smiley's black racing helmet, which shows extensive use and has "GORDON" printed on both sides in white lettering. The helmet comes in his Bell Helmets black bag, along with Smiley's blue windbreaker zip-front jacket with "Indy 500 1980" embroidered in white on the right front and an Indianapolis Motor Speedway patch on the left front. There is also a tan suitcase with a yellow "Gordon Smiley Motor Racing" decal on the top; inside are Smiley's Certificate of Proficiency from the SCCA Drivers School dated May 7, 1967, and his 3rd Place trophy from the Kansas City Region Sports Car Club of America's 4th Annual Race in 1958 when Smiley was only 12 years old. Great items for the racing aficionado.
