Gorgeous 1937 Babe Ruth Signed "Tax" Check (PSA)
Babe Ruth was looking for work in 1937. Certainly, he was making money from endorsements and various projects, but the kind of work that he really desired - to be a Major league manager - was not made available to him. He had played his last major league baseball for the Boston Braves in 1935 and retired during the season. It was thought teams wouldn't hire Ruth to manage because clubs were well aware that Ruth's flamboyant lifestyle as a player made it seem that he could not manage himself much less an entire team. In the season after this check was written, Ruth signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers as a coach. Ruth took batting practice, alays a big draw for fans. And Ruth even played in exhibition games for the Dodgers. Ruth batted and threw lefty, but he wrote right-handed, and the penmanship, from a fountain pen with blue ink, is neat, large, and unmistakably the Babe's. The approximately 3.5" x 8.5" check is drawn on the Chemical Bank and Trust Company, of New York City. The Babe's name is printed on the check, he dated it as September 26, 1937, and the check is made out to the "State Tax Commission" in the amount of $120.00. The check has been encapsulated and certified by PSA/DNA as AUTHENTIC AUTO. Inaugural Hall of Fame inductee Ruth lived larger than life. His fame is still enormous, and this signed check, in excellent condition, is signed by one of America's greatest idols.
