Grover Cleveland Alexander Signed 1936 R312 (PSA & JSA)

Grover Cleveland Alexander Signed 1936 R312 (PSA & JSA)

Hall of Fame right-hander Grover Cleveland Alexander was the son of a Democrat, so when Alexander was born in 1887, he was named after the serving Democrat President, Grover Cleveland. Offered is a cut signature from "Old Pete" Alexander, who is tied with Christy Mathewson for the all-time lead in National League wins with 373. Alexander pitched in the National League from 1911-30: with the Philadelphia Phillies (1911-17), Chicago Cubs (1918-26), St. Louis Cardinals (1926-29), and again with the Phillies (1930). Alexander won his amazing 373 games while losing only 208, with a career ERA of 2.56. He won three pitching Triple Crowns, and he was a 6-time NL leader in wins, a 6-time NL leader in strikeouts, and a 4-time NL leader in ERA. He served most of the 1918 season in France, as a sergeant with the U. S. Army Field Artillery, and he was mustard gassed and came back to baseball with shell shock and epileptic seizures, and the shell shock and seizures were often confused with his alcoholism, which had been a long-time problem for him. Alexander's greatest moments came in the 1926 World Series between his St. Louis Cards and the New York Yankees. He had pitched complete game victories in Games 2 and 6 of the Series and was unexpectedly used in relief when the home team Cardinals' starter, Jesse Haines, developed a blister on his pitching hand. Alexander came in to face New York Yankees star Tony Lazzeri with two outs, the bases loaded, and a 3-2 Cardinal lead. Alexander fanned Lazzeri and pitched two more innings of shutout relief to give the Cardinals the World Series triumph. Alexander signed his name in pencil as "GC Alexander." The cut is from a 1936 R312 premium. There is a partial Al Schacht signature on the front, but it was cut off to have the appearance of a single signature. On the reverse side of the Alexander signature is a partial photo image of Nick Altrock and Al Schacht, Major League players who became baseball "clowns." The cut exhibits some slight toning and measures approx. 2.25x5.4". The offering comes with PSA hologram and JSA Letter of Authenticity.
