High Grade 1938 All Star Game Press Pin

High Grade 1938 All Star Game Press Pin

Presented is a press pin for the 1938 Major League All-Star Game, an example of the first pin ever made for an All-Star Game. It is safe to say that it is the rarest of the All-Star pins. The 1938 All-Star Game, held on July 6th, was the sixth one ever held. It took place at Crosley Field in Cincinnati, before 27,067 fans, and the home team National League defeated the American League 4-1. For the National League, playing in his home park, Hall of Fame Reds catcher Ernie Lombardi had two hits and an RBI, and Hall of Famer Mel Ott, outfielder of the New York Giants, had a triple and a run scored. For the American league, Hall of Fame shortstop Joe Cronin went 2-for-3 and had the only AL RBI. Johnny Vander Veer, the Reds' lefty, started for the National League, and picked up the win Vander Veer didn't get the start just because he was a Cincinnati player. He had recently earned it, and more, by becoming the first and still only pitcher to throw back-to-back no-hitters, as Vander Veer no-hit the Boston Bees at home at Crosley Field just a few weeks earlier, on June 11th, and then, in his next start, on June 15th against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field, in the first ever Dodgers night game, Vander Meer amazingly repeated his no-hit performance. The AL starter, Hall of Famer New York Yankee Lefty Gomez, took the loss. The press pin has a diameter of 1.5". It features the iconic large letter "C" for Cincinnati and has a star in the middle of the "C." Printed on the pin is "PRESS ALL_STAR GAME CROSLEY FIELD CINCINNATI-1938." The red coloring on the pin exhibits some fading. One of the reasons that these press pins are so rare is that they were only given to the press. These pins are very hard to find in high grade and this pin is NRMT.
