Honus Wagner T206 Pose First-Generation Vintage Photograph by Carl Horner

Honus Wagner T206 Pose First-Generation Vintage Photograph by Carl Horner

A fresh-to-the-market specimen of the most famous baseball image of all. Ten times rarer than the multi-million dollar baseball card this was used to print, the number of specimens can be counted on one hand. There's slight restoration to the upper right-hand corner by a skilled craftsman, Visually, this is one of the finest known examples, perhaps the finest. There is not much we can say about the image... it is as familiar to you as the Mona Lisa or a map of the United States. When all other baseball imagery fades into history, this will be the last to go if at all. Wagner appears as baseball royalty void of the interfering color introduced to the image by the baseball card. Stripped down to his barest essentials, we see him as the beefy, brawny Dutchman, with an air of quiet grace bestowed upon him by his position as the finest player in the game. At the time this was shot by the great Carl Horner, Ty Cobb was a mere child in comparison to the multi-dimensional Wagner. This must be seen in person to be truly appreciated. The detail and contrast is simple perfection, and like a great painting gets better and better the more you view it. The appearance of this across our desks just recently, along with the Cobb and Lajoie T206 poses in this same auction, was a hobby revelation. The condition is about EX with a few small creases and a ghosted "11" that one can barely see on first glance. Measures 3.5" x 4.25." This is the true Holy Grail of baseball photography, plain and simple.
