Huey Newton & The Black Panthers Original Negatives (150+ images)
African-American political activist Huey Newton teamed with Bobby Seale to found the Black Panther Party in 1966. And as these 150+ negatives from the San Francisco Examiner's photo archives show, Newton was the focal point of a major trial in 1968 after he was involved in a shooting across the Bay in Oakland, during which a police officer was shot. Newton was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 2 to 15 years in prison before the California Appellate Court reversed the conviction and ordered a new trial. After two subsequent mistrials, the Alameda County Superior Court dismissed the charges after the district attorney said he would not pursue a fourth. One of the most interesting periods of African American culture and the spawn of many movements including rap and Tupac Shakur.
