Important 1909 Indianapolis Motor Speedway Poster from their Inaugural Opening
Spectacular art nouveau design, this 1909 Indianapolis Motor Speedway offering is in the pantheon of racing posters, perhaps the finest ever produced from the historic opening of this penultimate facility; at 400,000 total it is the highest-capacity sports venue in the world. Displaying incredibly vivid lithography and printed on heavier stock, this was created by the Otis Company and this 20x26" poster is framed to 28x36". To understand its significance, one copy is held by the Library of Congress, and this one was found in a desk belonging to Wilbur Shaw, President of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from 1945 until his death in 1954. Shaw was also a race car driver, winning the Indianapolis 500 three times, the first to win twice in a row. There is a small hole in the upper margin, otherwise it is in EX condition.
