Important 1952 Mickey Mantle Period Signed Original Photograph by Don Wingfield (PSA Type I)
Another Type I copy of a mysterious and significant Mickey Mantle photo - taken by Don Wingfield - offered in our previous auction, however this one has the added bonus of a wonderful period signature and inscription. To recap, what is generally agreed upon is that it was taken at Ebbets Field, and was used for his "1951" Wheaties card. Some uncertainty remains involving the timing, as we have found information indicating that it was taken at the 1952 World Series, or in spring training of 1951. Of course, it would be impossible to get a 1952 photo into a 1951 card set, though it has been speculated that the particular Wheaties set was issued over a few seasons, making that date possible. The spring '51 date would fit properly into the timeline, but it may have been retro-dated to explain the aforementioned question about timing, though the Yanks and Dodgers did play exhibition games up north before the start of the regular season. Image has great sepia tone and is in remarkable condition, with Mick signing his name along with "My Best Wishes" against the light sky background in the top left corner in 9/10 black ballpoint ink. Verso is blank except for Mantle's ID written in pen. Other notables: the Mantle signature is from that period and not the more familiar style that he developed over the years; there is a small tear to the bottom edge and very minor corner creasing; VG-EX condition and presents beautifully. Encapsulated and comes with PSA LOA (who also punted on the date, using "c. 1952") designating it as Type I as well as a Cert for the signature and inscription. Great provenance as our consignor - whose family owned and raced Triple Crown winner Affirmed - was close to many of the team's superstars. Significant image from a hard-to-find card.
