Jacinto Vasquez "Ruffian" Race Used & Signed Whip

Jacinto Vasquez "Ruffian" Race Used & Signed Whip

In 1975, Jacinto Vasquez was the regular jockey for both Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure and Triple Tiara winner Ruffian. A much-hyped match race between the two thoroughbreds was held on July 6, 1975, and Vasquez chose to ride Ruffian. Used while riding Ruffian, this riding crop shows nice use, is hand labeled "JV" on knob and is signed and inscribed "Ruffian" by Jacinto Vasquez in silver. Sadly the filly broke down during that race and had to be put down, one of the most tragic and most widely-viewed incidents in the sport's history. During his career Jacinto Vasquez was the only jockey to defeat Secretariat three times: in the Wood Memorial with Angle Light, in the Whitney Handicap aboard Onion, and in Secretariat's maiden race aboard Quebec.

Note: The whip was used by Jacinto Vasquez while riding Ruffian, but we cannot pinpoint to a certain race. We cannot confirm that it was worn in the 1975 Match Race vs. Foolish Pleasure.
