Jackie Robinson 1949 Batting Title - John A. "Bud" Hillerich Memorial Award
Jackie won the prestigious John A. "Bud" Hillerich Memorial Award for his NL batting title in 1949 and received this 10 1/2 x 14 1/2" parchment-style certificate on December 27, 1949. The certificate, still mounted within the original black frame after being preserved by the Robinson family for the last 56 years, accompanied the Silver Bat presented to the batting champs. These certificates given in the name of the founder of the Louisville Slugger bat company are quite scarce today, as the Silver Bat award is no longer given to the league batting champ but to the players at each position who have the highest average for the season. Of course, this may be the most significant Hillerich ever, given to the most significant player ever. For Jackie, such awards were vital in his quest to be accepted as an equal -- indeed, in his case he had to be better than equal to win such acceptance. And win them he did, beginning with the very first Rookie of the Year Award in '47 and the MVP trophy that same year of 1949. As carefully maintained as it has been, the certificate is clean and unyellowed, the image of Bud Hillerich looking stern as ever at the top center. Script and block lettering reads, "In recognition of outstanding achievement in Batting this certificate is presented to Jack Roosevelt Robinson who in the 1949 Baseball Season earned a batting average of .342 and was officially declared the Batting Champion of the Natonal League of Professional Baseball Clubs." The faded signature of Hillerich's son John is at the bottom. Some wrinkling a conservative VG-EX. An awesome piece to behold, given the history it embodies.
