This marvelous 7 x 9” photo from Jackie’s All-American football days at UCLA crackled across the AP wire on Oct. 26, 1945 when he signed a contract to play for the Montreal Royals, the Brooklyn Dodgers’ International League team, breaking baseball’s color barrier. Though an odd choice given the different sports, apparently white news outlets had no shots of him in his K.C. Monarchs baseball uniform. In any case, the photo fittingly and probably unwittingly makes him seem larger than life, towering as if a giant dwarfing parked cars as he soars in the air doing a Heisman pose. Original photo is VG w/some mild bunching and light damage on 3 corners. Back has an affixed caption titled “Negro Signs with Montreal Baseball Team”, another sign on the times.
