Joe Jackson Collection of "Fan Letters" from his Estate
Great collection of fan letters (80+) sent to Joe Jackson circa 1950, from all over the country. “Shoeless” Joe Jackson was one of the great ballplayers of his time. He played outfield from 1908 to 1920 for the Philadelphia A's, Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox. Babe Ruth has been quoted as saying that he modeled his hitting style after Joe Jackson. The “Pete Rose” of his day, he was banned from playing major league baseball as a result of his association with the “Black Sox” scandal of 1919. Most of the fan letters are handwritten and include the original envelopes. Many of his fans were requesting autographs. Ironically, Mr. Jackson was unable to read or write, so if the letters were in fact replied to and the requests fulfilled, they were most likely inked in the pen of his wife.
