Large 1940s Honus Wagner Sporting Goods Matchbook

Large 1940s Honus Wagner Sporting Goods Matchbook

Rare, complete 2-sided matchbook made by the Lion Match Co. in Pittsburgh. Features Honus Wagner headshot emblazoned on a red, white and blue Honus Wagner Sporting Goods Store matchbook cover. On the inside is a complete set of matches with a sport's name on each individual match! There is also a complete list of Wagner's baseball achievements listed on the matchbook. Flat size is 3.25 x 7.75". Folded it is 3.25" x 4 3/8". Its condition is EX-MT with very minor creasing on the edges. Mr. Wagner was one of the early baseball greats as a shortstop for Pittsburgh. His name will always be infamously associated with smoking as in 1909 he demanded that all of his baseball cards be pulled by the American Tobacco Co. because they were being distributed and packaged with their cigarettes. This resulted in Wagner being perceived as anti-smoking. It also resulted in his baseball card being exceedingly rare as most of them were pulled out of circulation; one of which recently sold for over 2 million dollars! The matches are unstruck and unseparated. This is an interesting and ironic piece of baseball folklore.
