A great piece of history, this letter from comes American League President Lee MacPhail discussing his decision in the controversial "Pine Tar" game. It discusses his ruminations over the incident and his thoughts on the ruling. "I hate to overrule the umpires, but in my opinion we should follow the intent of the rule and the spirit of the rule, not the strict ruling of the rule. The intent of the rule had nothing to do with affecting a home run or affecting a ball that was hit that didn't even hit the pine tar." Letter comes with an LOA and a ticket stub from the game.
