"Mahan" 1956 Meadowland Handicap Silver Trophy

This regal sterling silver trophy cup was presented to the owner of Mahan following his 1956 Meadowland Handicap victory at the Washington Park Club with Hall of Fame jockey William Shoemaker. Beautifully engraved "MEADOWLAND HANDICAP 1956" at the top and "Presented by Washington Park Club, Won by MAHAN, ch. h. 5, Avenger 2nd - Sans Tares, Owner - Hasty House Farms, Trainer - Harry Trostek, Jockey - William Shoemaker." Underneath the trophy reads "Made in England for Spaulding & Company, Hard Soldered." Included is an official program from this August 11, 1956, race. The trophy is 11" tall, 4.5" at the base and 10" at its widest point, and the condition is NRMT. Mahan is perhaps best known for defeating the famous racehorse, Swaps, and winning one of the most prestigious international races in the world, the Washington D.C. International at Laurel, Maryland.
