Mark Koenig Autograph Collection (60)

Mark Koenig Autograph Collection (60)

Mark Koenig was the unsung shortstop on the Murderer's Row Yankees of 1927, and forged a very good career in 12 seasons that included stints with the Reds, Tigers and Giants. He apparently was a pretty good archivist, too. Before his death in 1993, he gathered a museum's worth of press clippings, autographs, photos and other artifacts of his life in baseball. Sure, the '27 Yankees with Ruth and Gehrig pounded the ball and Waite Hoyt pitched through their opponents, but without defense the team might have been Attempted Murderers Row. Koenig never seemed to get his due amid a gang of legends. But this is his time in this fascinating lot. His autograph joins Eddie Lopat, Frank Crosetti, Joe Swell, Vic Raschi and other memorable Yankees on a 4 by 6-inch card (EX). He also has his playing contracts with the Reds, Giants and Tigers. Koenig's exploits as a Pinstriper get the full treatment in two included books, "The Greatest of All: The 1927 New York Yankees," and "Murderer's Row." Many of the dozens of clippings detail his life after his playing days. This is a great way to get to know a Yankee worth knowing.
