Meeting Across the River Handwritten Lyric

Meeting Across the River Handwritten Lyric

Original lyrics to “Meeting Across the River” on a torn sheet from a ruled notebook in Bruce’s clear and simple handwriting. Soulful and bluesy Springsteen song from ‘Born to Run” the album that spoke to a generation. Written with clarity, in black ballpoint, bold lettering and corrections all in his own hand, reveal the inner workings of a poetic genius of our generation. A masterpiece in its final stages, song tells yet another story of the deteriorating American condition. There are some differences in these lyrics verses the final version. They are mostly small. “Got a meeting with a man on the other side. Lyric reads “gotta”. Instead of “Hey Eddie this guy he’s the real thing” lyric reads and Eddie”. He crosses out “and don’t you know this is our” on line 9, and changes it to “the words passed this our last chance. On the final version it becomes “And the word's been passed this is our last chance”. Springsteen’s editing and ultimate changes appear throughout the 29 lines of the song. The presentation is extraordinary, as the words on the page capture the essence of the man and his music; the simplicity of the lyric resembles art. Condition of the sheet is EX to EX+. Beautifully framed with the album cover, overall measurement is 28x19”.
