Mel Ott All-Star Bat 1941 W/ Original Box

Mel Ott All-Star Bat 1941 W/ Original Box

In the summer before the world would change forever, Ted Williams slammed a walk-off homer into the right field stands to give the American League a stunning come-from-behind victory over the National League, 7-5 at the 1941 All-Star game. The game, remembered for Teddy Ballgame’s excited home run trot after the mammoth shot at Briggs Stadium in Detroit, is still considered one of the best played in the history of the series. This very clean Louisville Slugger bat from the game belonged to Hall of Fame New York Giant Mel Ott and has the signatures of several members of the National League squad carved into the bat. Among the signatures are Hall of Fame Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Ark Vaughan who clubbed 2 homers in consecutive innings in the losing cause, Ott and crafty left-hander Carl Hubbell. The bat is stained dark brown and has very few signs of discoloration. The only scratches or nicks of any note are on the bat handle. Ott shipped this bat to an acquaintance. The original box with Ott’s hand-written name and Louisiana address on the return sticker add to the uniqueness of this item, as does a copy of the recipient’s diary entries noting his meeting Ott and receipt of the slugger’s bat.
