Mel Ott Signature (PSA)
Mel Ott was known as "Master Melvin," in part because the Hall of Fame outfielder was only 18 years old when he joined the New York Giants in 1926. Offered is a Mel Ott signature on the back, blank side of a 3x5" J.L. Hudson Company card that a company sales representative would leave at a residence when paying a sales call. Ott was only 5'9" tall, small for a power hitter. Ott batted left-handed, and he was noted for his then-unusual habit of raising his right leg high in the air before he lowered that leg and began his swing. Ott became the Giants' regular right fielder in 1928 and spent his entire playing career with the Giants, playing through 1947. Ott batted .304 lifetime and hit 511 home runs, the first time a National League player had ever hit more than 500 home runs. Ott led the National League in home runs six times, then a record. He was a 12-time NL All-Star and a member of the 1933 New York Giants World Champions. From 1945-48, Ott was the Giants' manager. The card exhibits some darkening because of the passage of time. Ott signed his name as "Mel Ott" in 8+/10 blue ink. At the top of the card is typed "Hall of Fame" and "Mel Ott." The long-time New York star, one of the most popular players in the New York Giants' history, passed away in 1958, so his signature is scarce.
