Mickey Mantle & Willie Mays Signed Limited Edition Lithographs
Presented are two limited edition signed lithographs that feature two of the iconic center fielders of New York City teams in the 1950s - Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays. These two immortals patrolled center field at Yankee Stadium and the Polo Grounds, ballparks located only a short walk from each other. Each of the lithographs is in color, and the colorized portion of the rendering measures approx. 7x10" in each, with both of the artistic areas surrounded by a white border, bringing each of the lithographs to a total size of 11x15". There is no date on either of the pieces, but Mays played from 1951-57 in New York before his New York Giants moved to San Francisco. Each of the lithographs is hand-numbered, in pencil, 743/2000, so it is reasonable to assume that the lithographs were completed at the same time. With 536 home runs, Mantle has more homers than any other switch-hitter in baseball history, and no one who witnessed it will ever forget the assault of Babe Ruth's single season home run record of 60 that Mantle and Roger Maris accomplished in 1961, with Maris blasting 61 to top Ruth and Mantle losing games because of a hip abscess. In many polls, Willie Mays often ranks second to Ruth as baseball's G.O.A.T. At one point, Mays seemed to have a chance to top Ruth's once all-time lifetime home run record of 714, and Willie's overall game included his being outstanding in each of baseball's five "tools": Hitting, hitting with power, running, fielding, and throwing. Each lithograph depicts a young, vibrant superstar on the way up, set against what appears to be a background of a spring training field. Each signature is neatly signed with a blue marker.
