November 16th, 1940, Cornell vs. Dartmouth "Fifth Down" Game Ticket Stub - Only Known Example PSA GD 2 (MK)
Displayed is the only known example of a ticket stub from the famous 1940 Cornell vs. Dartmouth "Fifth Down" football game. For the only time in NCAA history, a telegram decided a football game in the Dec. 16, 1940, contest between unbeaten Cornell and Dartmouth. Cornell came into the game, held at Dartmouth's Memorial Field, in Hanover, New Hampshire, with an 18-game unbeaten streak and ranked second nationally in the Associated Press Poll. With less than a minute in the game, Dartmouth had a 3-0 lead but Cornell had a first down and goal-to-go from Dartmouth's 6-yard line. Three running plays left the Cornell Big Red with the ball on the Dartmouth 1-yard line. Cornell was penalized 5 yards for Delay of Game, and on the subsequent play, with nine seconds remaining, Cornell's quarterback "Pop" Scholl threw an incompletion into the end zone. Referee Red Friesell mistakenly gave Cornell another down, and on this "Fifth Down," Pop Scholl hit William Murphy in the end zone for a touchdown and Cornell kicked the extra point. When Cornell was reviewing game films, the mistaken fifth down became clear, and the Cornell players, head Coach Carl Snavely, acting Athletic Director Bob Kane and the University's president, Edmund Erza Day (a Dartmouth alumnus) decided to offer a forfeit of the game to Dartmouth, and they telegraphed the offer, which Dartmouth coach Earl 'Red" Blaik and college officials accepted. The game ticket stub, for a $3.00 seat, measures 1.25x2", has been encapsulated and PSA graded GOOD 2 mk. This is the only known example.
