Official Wayne Gretzky Scoresheet from Record-Breaking 1,851 Points Game
Hockey history was made on October 15, 1989 as the legendary Wayne Gretzky cemented his legacy by shattering Gordie Howe's all-time NHL points record. This score sheet from that game is signed by both greats, as well as Sandy Miller, the off-ice official scorekeeper that night. It was only fitting that "The Great One" would achieve the record in Edmonton, where he had cut his teeth as a youth and had accomplished most of his spectacular feats as a pro. The Oilers had traded Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings less than a year before, so when he returned to Northlands Colisseum one point away from Howe's record 1,851 point total, the situation was ideal for a statement game. Gretzky tied the record on an assist early in the game, then eclipsed the mark with a backhanded tying goal in the final minute of regulation, earning a standing ovation from the crowd. In typical Gretzky fashion, he scored the winning goal in overtime to boot!
