Original Curlin 2007 Breeders' Cup Classic Worn Winning Shoe

Original Curlin 2007 Breeders' Cup Classic Worn Winning Shoe

The auction of this historic Curlin race worn winning shoe represents not only one of Thoroughbred racing's most accomplished champions but also his victory in one of the sport's most illustrious contests. It was without a doubt the wettest, most dismal weekend in the history of the Breeders’ Cup Championships as a steady hard rain pelted Monmouth Park in 2007. But then late in afternoon the sun broke through, and nine top-class Thoroughbreds basked in the amber glow of sunset as the field headed onto the track for the Breeders' Cup Classic. It looked to be one of the deepest and most talented Classic fields ever, with five 3-year-olds: Any Given Saturday, Curlin, Hard Spun, Street Sense and Tiago -- all with a chance at an Eclipse Award. On paper, it looked to be a competitive race but in the end it was Preakness and Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Curlin, the long-bodied and long-striding chestnut, who rallied from 10 lengths back to win going away by 4 1/2 lengths, nailing down Horse of the Year honors. In all, Curlin won 11 of his 16 career starts, with total earnings of $10,50,800 including victories in the Dubai World Cup, Stephen Foster Handicap and Woodward Stakes before retiring to stud as a two-time Horse of the Year. He is now considered one of the most successful young stallions in the racing industry today siring 2010 Belmont Stakes winner Palice Malice, 2012 Travers Stakes Winner Keen Ice, Preakness winner Exaggerator and 2019 Breeders' Cup Classic winner and older champion Vino Rosso. The shoe is one of four aluminum racing plates secured by Curlin groon Felix Miranda Guitierrez, who held the colt when he was reshod following his return to his Fairgrounds Racetrack home stable after the race. The shoe is mounted on a solid 8" x 10" walnut plaque with associated engraved brass haltertag nameplate and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. A wonderful opportunity to own one of the original shoes that pounded down the stretch to victory in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Classic, in what was to be Curlin's first major step to racing’s Hall of Fame.
