Original Sea Biscuit Photo Signed by Owner Charles S. Howard
Even people who know nothing of sports at all know the name Seabiscuit, one of the most beloved athletes in American history. This photo of him is boldly inscribed and signed by Seabiscuit's owner, Charles S. Howard. Originally purchased for $8,000, he would go on to become the biggest race horse in the country. In the words of Grantland Rice, Seabiscuit had "the heart of a lion and the flying feet of a gazelle". On November 1, 1938, Seabiscuit beat War Admiral in the "greatest horse race ever." Photo shows him with Jockey Johnny "Red" Pollard saddled up. It is signed, "To Rodrick Williams Esq. from Charles S. Howard" in bold ink. Howard died in 1950 and his autograph on anything is extremely scarce. This is only the second signed Howard item we have ever seen! Photo (9-7/8 x 7-7/8") is EX while Howard signature in fountain ink is 8/10.
