Rare 1951 Eddie Gaedel Game Scorecard and Program

Rare 1951 Eddie Gaedel Game Scorecard and Program

From one of the most storied days in baseball history. The Great Bill Veeck hires dwarf Eddie Gaedel to pinch hit in a seemingly innocuous game on August 19, 1951. Because of the size of the strike zone (a minuscule 1 1/2 inches) pitcher Bobby Cain can do nothing but walk Gaedel. Catcher Bob Swift gets into the act by getting down onto his knees. Gaedel is subsequently banned from baseball for life to prevent teams of dwarves winning every game (they would walk in every at bat). Scorecard is form the second game of the doubleheader that same day but is still listed in the lineup. Eddie Gaedel’s name does not appear in the lineup, but his uniform number “1/8” does. Best of all, the scorecard is signed in vintage pencil “Bill Veeck.” It is also likely that this was signed on that very day Gaedel appeared (August 19, 1951). This is based on the type of Veeck signature (style is pure 1951) and that it is also in scorecard pencil (thus signed at the ballpark). Bringing Bill Veeck this scorecard and have him sign it was this fan’s way of saying way to go to the ultimate baseball showman. Only a few specimens of this program are known to exist. This is the only signed one we have ever seen. Signature is NRMT, program is VG-FIne.
